What Makes a True Friend According to Scripture (Proverbs & Gospels)

Published by Lumina Editorial • 7 min read

Superficial connections are easy to find, but genuine, trustworthy friends are rare. Scripture places high value on deep friendship, describing true companions as essential protectors of spiritual health, emotional balance, and moral integrity.

The Covenant Friendship of David and Jonathan

One of the greatest biblical examples of friendship is David and Jonathan (1 Samuel 18). Despite Jonathan's father (King Saul) seeking to murder David, Jonathan risked his life and royal inheritance to protect David out of covenant loyalty, demonstrating that biblical friendship is rooted in mutual sacrifice.

Key Scripture Passages

"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity."

— Proverbs 17:17

"Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are profuse."

— Proverbs 27:6

1. "As Iron Sharpens Iron" (Proverbs 27:17)

Proverbs 27:17 notes: "Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend." True friends do not merely flatter you; they gently speak truth, challenge bad habits, and encourage your personal and spiritual growth.

2. Loyalty in Times of Adversity (Proverbs 17:17)

Proverbs 17:17 declares: "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity." Fair-weather friends disappear when public opinion shifts or crisis hits. True biblical friends stand by you during seasons of failure or grief.

3. Cultivating Vulnerability and Trust

In John 15:15, Jesus said to his disciples: "No longer do I call you servants... but I have called you friends; for all things that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you." True friendship requires vulnerability—sharing your authentic struggles rather than presenting a perfect facade.

How to Build Deep Friendships

  • Be the kind of friend you want to have: practice active listening, loyalty, and secrecy with confidences.
  • Schedule a regular monthly check-in with 1–2 trusted friends to discuss real life struggles.
  • Gently encourage friends when you notice them straying into destructive habits.
